About
Newberry Manor

Innkeepers Warren and Joy Sheppard have long shared a love of old architecture, including Antebellum and Victorian homes. For many years they enjoyed visiting a variety of small Southern towns where they liked shopping in the local antique shops. While in these small towns, they would also enjoy driving around and looking at historic old area homes, admiring their grace, beauty, and timeless elegance.

On many of these long weekend drives, they would find themselves in Newberry, SC. It was a town where they found a connection….a connection to the friendly people and to the incredible old homes that the town is known for. The dream began to form that one day they would like to buy one of these grand old homes and open a Bed and Breakfast.

Finally, after raising their children in Lexington, SC, it was time to make the dream come true.

They began searching for the perfect Newberry home to buy and turn into a B&B. After a thorough search, they found and purchased the home that is today known as the Newberry Manor.

Davis worked in numerous styles and built according to designs by several architects but his work is of a consistent high quality. This three story home’s exterior is made of Pebble Dash Stucco. \ Built for Robert Downs Wright and family, this large asymmetrical dwelling features a left corner turret under conical topped roof and a wraparound first story porch. A pedimented porch entranceway is supported by colonettes, which are repeated on wooden pedestals on the porch between a turned balustrade. The oversized window’s sash are vertical one over one with rope pulley system. \ \ Approaching the main entrance off the wrap around porch one notices to the left of the door, the plaque depicting the Newberry Manor’s historical significance. panorama_7F22E55A_7597_4C6E_41D4_8A03BEB41429.subtitle = Stepping through the front door into the grand hall you are immediately transported back in time gazing at the trim around the doors and windows with the medallions, the wainscoting, fretwork above the staircase and “finger grip” hand rails all typical of Cam Davis’ work. \ On the landing is a portrait of Mrs. Mary Eloise Welch, Wright b1874 - d1973. She married Robert in December 1900. Eloise was the daughter of a prominent doctor/surgeon in Newberry. There are many old newspaper articles about her traveling around promoting women’s education. She applied for the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) which requires proof of ancestry. To our astonishment, her third Great Grandfather was James Sheppard, Sr. and he is Warren’s fourth Great Grandfather which makes Eloise and Warren fourth cousins. James Sheppard settled in Newberry with a 300 acre land grant in 1767 before Newberry became a town proper in 1789. panorama_7F248A38_7591_C42A_41CB_C01729830BDA.subtitle = The home built during the Victorian Era, makes the name for this room appropriate, in honor of Queen Victoria. \ Homage is made to the Queen with several dolls displayed throughout since she was affectionately known for her love of dolls. On the fireplace hearth sits a Victorian doll carriage with a sweet, handmade doll in a white christening gown. \ The soft tones of the lavender walls is the perfect setting for the 1840’s mahogany canopy bed draped with eye-catching floral vines and white lights. \ Vintage Lady’s dressing table set and Russian blown glass perfume bottles adorn the feminine dresser in the corner. \ A Drop Front Secretary makes an ideal writing desk for Queen Victoria to sign important documents or for our guest to write a note in the journals in our guest rooms. \ A pushbutton light switch, adjacent to the door, is the only preexisting one in the Manor. panorama_7F3AE18E_7590_C4E6_41D3_A2269FFE31EA.subtitle = You are immediately drawn to the room on your right, the original Men’s Parlor, and now the Library, where the men would have smoked cigars, drink their after dinner cognac and talk of work and politics. \ In the corner, next to the fireplace, sits an 1890’s pump organ several guests have played. \ On the fireplace mantel are photos of the Sheppard’s family. There’s a small photo of Joy’s Great Grandparents, Benjamin F. and Susannah Jane Shoemake with baby Mary. Warren’s parents Homer and Kathryn Sheppard sharing an embrace and next to it is one of Homer with his family in front of their home in Prosperity. \ There are numerous books, on the shelves, for your reading pleasure, as well as, decks of cards, puzzles, and board games. On the coffee table you’ll even find a vintage Alabaster Chess Set. panorama_7F3B036C_7590_C42A_41D4_89361A70F6DB.subtitle = Opposite from the Library, we invite our guests to the Parlor, once known as the Lady’s Parlor, to join in conversation, watch tv or just relax. \ \ Imagine, if you will, the ladies gathering in the Parlor after a pleasant dinner sitting before the coal burning fireplace, one of ten in the house, the only one containing the original surround tile. They’re chatting about their children, offering a bit of advice on running a home and one of the ladies playing softly on the 1800’s Hardman Baby Grand Piano resting in the turret space graced with a Fenton Telescope converted Oil Lamp. \ It’s an inviting room with the last remaining original ceiling lights dating from the 1890’s. panorama_7F3B27AC_7591_4C2A_41BC_5F2DE89B7D8D.subtitle = As you step on to the Heart Pine floor to the Upstairs Hall, it’s obviously the perfect place for our guests to “gather”. Whether it’s a bride and her bridal party getting ready for her BIG day, a family enjoying time together or Alumnist from Newberry College reminiscing of days gone by. There’s lots of comfortable seating including the Gooseneck Sofa upholstered in a vintage pattern. Guests can use the Shrimp Marble Top coffee table for their afternoon glass of wine, bedtime tea or play a game of cards. \ All the furniture and decorative pieces have been selected with its placement in mind. You may notice a unique piece next to the third floor stairs. Do you know what it is called? Normally, you would see it in the entrance hall during the 1800’s or so. It’s called a Petticoat Mirror. Ladies would have never left their home without first checking to see if their petticoat was showing, that would have been a terrible faux pas. \ Are you curious about the pictures on the wardrobe? They are of the same person. She is Johanna Maria Lind, Jenny Lind, to those who knew her. She was a Swedish Opera singer often called the “Swedish Nightingale”. One of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century. You will also find a larger picture of her in our dining room. panorama_7F3B2D39_7590_DC2A_41CD_11350620A515.subtitle = This bright, sunny room says, “Come on in, have a seat and enjoy a full Southern Style breakfast.” The dining table is 1940’s Duncan Fife with inlaid wood and scalloped corners illuminated by a century old Chrystal Chandelier. \ On either side of the fireplace you will see Cam Davis’ signature built-in china cabinets, perfect to display Joy’s collection of china and glassware. \ The stunning pair of curved buffets with intricate inlays and burled design are a beautiful way to store the Old Country Rose China pattern used for breakfast service. panorama_7F3B3114_7591_C5FA_41BB_DE3D5F661B5C.subtitle = Appropriately named for a charming Southern lady whose soft voice, warm demeanor and caring nature is aptly named in honor of Rose Kathryn Temples Sheppard, Warren’s Mother. On the jewelry table, by the bed, is a photo of her and his father, Homer Sheppard. \ Our Bridal Suite, in a soft peach hue, is furnished with a 1900’s Carved French Oak bed, matching shrimp marble night stand and full length mirrored, double dressing table. \ Green velvet, rose carved chair and needlepoint stool sits in the corner lighted by a feminine stand lamp. \ The decor of Bridal dolls, Ladies portraits, vintage and antique perfume bottles add to the finishing touches. \ The rooms curvature wall is designed to allow access to the large bathroom that features its original claw-foot tub. panorama_7F3B5BD6_7591_C466_4191_1FCFCB11BD46.subtitle = This is the most requested suite, possibly because of the round, turret wall and large curved windows. It’s the perfect spot for the 1840’s Tiger Oak bed which is accompanied by a large matching Armoire. You can relax in the comfy chair by the fireplace. \ The color scheme of scarlet and gray was chosen to honor one of the founders of Newberry College, John Bachman, Minister of St. John Lutheran Church in Charleston, SC. You’ll see his photo on the mantel along with his wife Marie. \ On the table, by the window, is a booklet, “An Address on Education” written by John Bachman. Delivered on the day of the laying of the corner-stone of Newberry College July 15, 1857. \ The Bachman’s formed a close relation with the John Audubon family. Bachman, believing in the importance in education, enjoyed working with Audubon in researching plant and animal life. To honor Bachman, Audubon even named a few species after him, Bachman Hare, Bachman Sparrow and Bachman Warbler, to name a few. Bachman’s wife, Marie, was a water colorist and assisted Audubon in painting the backgrounds of many of the illustrations. Over the fireplace is an Audubon print of ducks and on the mantel is a brass duck to bring the picture to life. \ By the fireplace, on the wall, is a water color print by William Frank Lominack, Jr. of Keller Hall, the second oldest building on the Newberry College campus. \ The original closet in this suite has been converted into a private bath. panorama_7F3B5FAE_7590_FC26_41C3_EAFE45326305.subtitle = In the mid 1930’s Eloise rented the house to Ernest and Minnie (Houge) Clary for $20 a month. In the 1940’s the Clary’s bought the home, raised their family and then ran a boarding house to the locals. The Census shows the tenants were mostly teachers at Newberry College. Ms. Minnie lived here until the late 1980’s. \ Barbara and Franklin Miller bought the home in 1992 and are responsible for the major renovations. It took 3 years of painstaking work to bring back the Wright-Clary house to it’s former “glory”. They opened the doors to Barklin House Bed and Breakfast and ran it as such until 2010. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for their insight and perserverance turning this old stately manor back to a real gem. \ \ An eye catching piece in the hallway and Warren’s favorite, is the pristine 1917 Victrola on your left. Our Guests enjoy listening to it play vintage records. On your right, is one of Joy’s favorites. A late 1800’s English Pram adorned with a period parasol. \ Another fine piece in the Grand Hall is the mid 1800’s Curio Cabinet with rounded beveled glass housing some of our great estate finds. panorama_7F3B6849_7591_C46B_4180_D0453EA3B8C1.subtitle = We have a large, beautiful backyard where in the past we have hosted weddings, family reunions, and a variety of parties. Please contact us if you would like to discuss renting this space for your special event. panorama_7F3B6B37_7590_C426_41D3_2ACAA964CEF7.subtitle = As you step down from the hallway through the double French doors into the Sun Room, formerly the covered porch, you are awakened by the aroma of early morning coffee served on the antique dough table. \ Joy’s many cookbooks are stored in the most sentimental heirloom piece, the Pie Safe, handcrafted by Warren’s Grandfather, Ira Sheppard for his bride, Laura Stockman, as a wedding gift in 1901. \ Featured walls in the Sun Room are the original Pebble Dash Stucco protected from the elements by the porch roof. panorama_7F3B6E3A_7591_DC2E_41CD_DD65460CEF96.subtitle = Curved wall entry, this large bath is original to the house for the use of the four children of the Wright family and later the Clary’s. A beautiful fireplace warms this room while you soak in the claw foot tub with rose water, bubble bath or rose petals. \ Placed on an oak mirrored dresser is a painted china tray with a vintage Lady’s dressing set, lit by a Fenton, Carnival glass lamp. Don’t let the purple colors fool you…..when lit this lamp glows bright red. panorama_7F3BD303_7591_45DE_41DC_5DB246E242CA.subtitle = Joy’s parents, James and Julia Douglas, appropriately named this room the Royal Suite. We have discovered our family ancestry has deep roots in French and English royalty. Most notable ancestor is King Edward II, b1284 - d1327 married to Isabella of France, b1295 - d1358. \ At the entry, is a Marble top table with Antique Red Iris lamp. It is our largest guest room, of the Manor, richly decorated in gold and ruby red tones. On either side of the King size Four Poster bed, is a pair of Mother of Pearl Asian wall hangings. Asian style lamps light the bedside on Lyre nightstand tables. In the corner, by the French Oak Triple Armoire, sits a tall, vase of red roses on a pedestal table. At the foot of the bed, Mother of Pearl inlaid table and matching curved chairs. \ Sitting in front of the sunny bow window is an 1870’s to 1880’s mahogany fainting sofa. In that time, women wore corsets so tight they were subject to faint. \ As you look around the room you’ll see, family photos. The Douglas’ by the bed, Joy’s Great Great Grandparents, George W. and Etta Shoemake on the desk. Atop the armoire is the Ancestry tree of King EdwardII, Joy’s Grandparents, Laurine and, Joseph Hopkins and Joy’s Great Grandparents, Willie A. and Lizzie Hopkins. \ And, as in the President Suite, the former closet has been converted into an en suite bath. ### Title panorama_79956AF6_7597_C426_41C1_8985C0878EE8.label = Front Entrance panorama_7F22E55A_7597_4C6E_41D4_8A03BEB41429.label = Foyer panorama_7F248A38_7591_C42A_41CB_C01729830BDA.label = Victoria Suite panorama_7F3AE18E_7590_C4E6_41D3_A2269FFE31EA.label = Library panorama_7F3B036C_7590_C42A_41D4_89361A70F6DB.label = Parlor panorama_7F3B19BD_7591_442A_41BC_B8D1F0473650.label = Stairway panorama_7F3B27AC_7591_4C2A_41BC_5F2DE89B7D8D.label = Upstairs Hall panorama_7F3B2D39_7590_DC2A_41CD_11350620A515.label = Dining Room panorama_7F3B3114_7591_C5FA_41BB_DE3D5F661B5C.label = Rose Kathryn Suite panorama_7F3B35CB_7591_4C6E_41A4_1B6FC5BF712C.label = Second Floor Sitting Area panorama_7F3B5BD6_7591_C466_4191_1FCFCB11BD46.label = President's Suite panorama_7F3B5FAE_7590_FC26_41C3_EAFE45326305.label = Hallway panorama_7F3B6849_7591_C46B_4180_D0453EA3B8C1.label = Back Yard Wedding Venue panorama_7F3B6B37_7590_C426_41D3_2ACAA964CEF7.label = Sun Room panorama_7F3B6E3A_7591_DC2E_41CD_DD65460CEF96.label = Rose Kathryn Bathroom panorama_7F3BD303_7591_45DE_41DC_5DB246E242CA.label = Royal Suite video_8A344CD4_ADF0_FC3D_41BD_BBDA63FE3CF2.label = video-pianomusic video_8C4DD420_AD91_6C15_41AE_E0CF172B7358.label = video-rosesuitebathroom video_8C59B4D2_AD97_AC35_41DD_A9995318279A.label = video-victoriasuitedoll video_8E234D57_ADF3_BC3B_41E2_72B65A3AD5F9.label = video-presidentssuite video_8E54F6C5_ADF0_EC1F_41D8_6177244233D1.label = video-royalsuite video_B29308B1_ADB1_6477_41E4_811B88D7C0C1.label = video-diningroomtable ## Action ### URL LinkBehaviour_B975DBAD_AD91_A46F_41E2_BE4A992A084A.source = https://thenewberrymanor.com/about/ LinkBehaviour_EAD354C5_AFF1_AC1F_41DC_42208C5581B9.source = https://thenewberrymanor.com/about/
